Back to courseChapter 4 · Reading in practice

How to ask a question

A useful reading usually starts with a good question. A closed question (“yes/no”, “when”) limits you. An open question gives tarot room to shed light.

Turn “yes/no” into open questions

  • Instead of “Will he come back?” → “What is keeping me in this relationship?”
  • Instead of “Should I quit my job?” → “What am I really looking for in work?”
  • Instead of “When will I be rich?” → “What’s blocking my financial stability?”

Open questions point at you — what you can change — rather than at other people or a fixed future.

Ask about yourself, not others

Reading to “probe” someone else’s thoughts is both unreliable and disrespectful. Keep the question on your side: your feelings, your choices, your next step.

A little preparation

  • Pause, breathe, let the mind settle.
  • Write the question out clearly — doing so already helps you understand yourself.
  • Don’t re-ask the same thing to “change the result.” Take what the cards offer and sit with it.
A good question isn’t one that yields a certain answer — it’s one that opens an honest conversation with yourself.
