Reading responsibly: ethics & limits

5 min read

Tarot is a tool, and like any tool, how you use it decides whether it supports or harms. Here are the principles Mai believes keep reading healthy.

Don’t sow fear

A good reading never threatens or pronounces grim things about illness, death, or disaster. Even “hard” cards like Death or the Tower speak of transformation and rebuilding, not doom. If an interpretation leaves you panicked, that’s a sign of poor reading, not of fate.

Preserve the querent’s agency

Tarot suggests; it doesn’t command. A reader shouldn’t say “you must break up” or “don’t take that job.” The cards’ role is to widen perspective; the decision always belongs to the querent.

Know your limits

Tarot is not:

  • Medical or mental-health diagnosis or treatment.
  • Financial or legal advice.
  • A tool to judge or surveil other people.

When someone is in genuine crisis, the kindest thing isn’t another card — it’s pointing them toward professional help.

Care for reader and listener alike

If you read for others, remember your words carry weight. Speak with gentleness, and leave people with hope and the power to act.

A simple compass: a good reading leaves people steadier, not more afraid.
